Walk the Royal Loop: The King Charles III England Coast Path on the Isle of Wight
In a landmark moment for British nature, His Majesty King Charles III officially inaugurated the England Coast Path on March 19, 2026. Renamed in his honour, this 2,700-mile National Trail is now the longest managed coastal walking route in the world.
While the path stretches from the Scottish border to the tip of Cornwall, its most spectacular “loop” happens right here on the Isle of Wight. At The Island Holiday Company, we offer a curated collection of properties that sit directly on this record-breaking trail.

🗺️ Your Step-by-Step 7-Day Itinerary
Most walkers take 5 to 7 days to complete the full 70-mile (113km) Island circuit. Consequently, we have designed this “Slow Travel” itinerary to start and end at the island’s major ferry hubs.
Phase One: The Historic East Coast
- Day 1: Cowes to Ryde (12 Miles). This section offers a mix of sailing heritage and Victorian grandeur. You will pass the Royal Yacht Squadron and the gates of Osborne House. Stay in our Ryde properties to end your day with a stroll down the iconic pier.
- Day 2: Ryde to Bembridge (8 Miles). Experience sandy lagoons and quirky houseboats along this stretch. After crossing the St Helens Duver, you can explore the hidden cafes of Bembridge Harbour.
Phase Two: Cliffs and Coves
- Day 3: Bembridge to Shanklin (10 Miles). Prepare for high drama and white chalk cliffs. The climb up Culver Down provides 360-degree views of the English Channel. Our Shanklin apartments offer the perfect “boots-off” luxury afterwards.
- Day 4: Shanklin to Ventnor (8 Miles). This route features tropical greens and the famous “Landslip.” You will walk through the lush, jungle-like Bonchurch Landslip into the Mediterranean microclimate of Ventnor.
Phase Three: The Wild West
- Day 5: Ventnor to Brighstone (13 Miles). Rugged and untamed, this is the quietest part of the trail. You can visit St. Catherine’s Lighthouse before retreating to one of our rural Brighstone or Chale homes.
- Day 6: Brighstone to Freshwater Bay (9 Miles). This is dinosaur territory. At low tide, look for footprints in the rocks at Compton Bay.
- Day 7: Freshwater Bay to Yarmouth (10+ Miles). For the grand finale, you will stand atop the cliffs overlooking The Needles.

👑 What’s New for the Path in 2026?
The transition to a National Trail has brought “Royal” level investment to our coastline. Recent updates include:
Improved Coastal Access
New, safer diversions and improved boardwalks at Luccombe now make the “Chine” sections easier to navigate. Furthermore, the path now legally “rolls back” inland as cliffs erode, ensuring the route stays continuous for generations.
National Nature Reserves
Additionally, you should look out for the newly declared King’s Series of National Nature Reserves. These areas protect our rare Red Squirrels and Chalkhill Blue butterflies along the route.
