Description

This delightful two bedroom property has an abundance of original features, giving it a huge amount of character. The entrance is a short walk from the parking area, along a pathway that runs adjacent to the mill stream. The front door, painted a soft green, opens into a hallway off which you can access the lounge and bathroom. One side of this cosy lounge is dominated by an impressive inglenook fireplace, which houses a wood burner. A corner sofa provides the perfect place to curl up in front of the fire and watch a favourite old movie. Walking through the lounge takes you into a surprisingly spacious kitchen diner, with traditional country style units. The dining area is bathed in light from the wall of windows and skylight, with a back door that opens on to a small private terrace, making this a quiet spot for a morning coffee. The interior walls, some of which are exposed stonework, are painted off-white, highlighting the original beams. On climbing the stairs from the hallway you reach a large landing, which can be used to unpack or relax in, before entering the master bedroom, which has a double bed and plenty of storage. Next door the second bedroom has bunk beds, ideal for two children.

The Water Mill itself has existed for over a thousand years and is first mentioned in the doomsday book A.D 1086. Still a working mill, it has supplied flour and animal feeds to the people of the island for many years. Flour, muesli and oats are still produced today and can be purchased on site.
Having always been a popular tourist attraction, The Mill is set in 35 acres of rural landscape where you’ll find proud looking peacocks strutting freely around the grounds, often with a few doves or ducks in tow.
As a guest staying at any one of the holiday properties on site you will have free access to the various attractions when open, which are just a stone’s throw away from your accommodation. (Please check the opening times to avoid disappointment when booking.)

After exploring the Mill, why not relax and indulge in a cream tea or ice cream at the onsite café, which is a converted 17th century cattle barn - you can still see the marks where the cows rubbed against the pillars!
A round of the 18-hole adventure golf course or a peep inside the small war museum can be entertaining for all ages. When the attractions are closed the owners are very happy for guests to wander within the extensive grounds. A stroll up towards the barns, home to a large portable steam engine and other old farming equipment, followed by a visit to the small windmill on the hill and back along the river, makes for an enjoyable walk. Not surprisingly there’s an abundance of wildlife in the area – in particular, keep a look out for the shy red squirrels, which the island is famous for or the wide variety of birds. If you’re looking for a rural setting from which to explore the island, then look no further!

Location

The picturesque village of Calbourne takes its name from the stream that passes through the village - the Caul Bourne. Arguably one of the prettiest west Wight villages, it is not surprising that much of Calbourne is a designated conservation area. The chocolate-box houses that flank Winkle Street (aka Barrington Row) date from the 18th-century and overlook the village namesake. There are numerous local footpaths and bridleways, stretching out over miles of Downland and countryside. Freshwater Bay, famous for crystal clear water and striking coastal views from the cliff tops, along with the iconic Needles are to the West.

Renowned for having a warm, sunny climate the island has 57 miles of coastline containing some of the best beaches in the UK. Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde offer miles of golden sandy beaches, whilst Freshwater, Totland, Colwell and Steephill Cove are attractive Bays, great for swimming and sailing.

There are a variety of attractions across the island which can be enjoyed throughout the year - explore the quaint villages, indulge in cream teas and local produce, discover the inventive ways to use garlic at The Garlic Farm and restaurant, take the plunge at the Tapnell Farm Aqua Park, explore the rides and grounds at Robin Hill Adventure Park, broaden your knowledge at the museums and historic sites – or fall in love with the adorable animals at one of the dedicated animal centres, like the Donkey or Wildheart Animal Sanctuaries. Alternatively step into the world of Queen Victoria by visiting her Italian inspired holiday home Osborne House, designed by her beloved husband Prince Albert or enjoy the unique charm to be found at Quarr Abbey. Discover the magical Shanklin Chine or Ventnor Botanical Gardens. Or perhaps a day simply fishing or surfing is more like it?
Finally, don’t forget that there is often an event or festival to factor into your holiday agenda, such as the famous Isle of Wight Festival, Cowes Week, the Walking Festival or the Classic Car Extravaganza.
