Location

The seaside town of Shanklin is well served by public transport around the island with regular buses and the railway ‘Island Line’ to Ryde and Sandown. The main town is only a 15 minute walk and offers a multitude of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants to entertain all ages and tastes. During the summer months the seafront is bustling with people gathering at one of the many restaurants or choosing a favoured spot for swimming and sunbathing along the long, golden beach. There is a lot of fun to be had for all the family with a variety of traditional seaside amusements, including crazy golf, arcades and ice cream stalls. If you like exploring, then Shanklin Chine is a must; with its natural beauty surrounded by waterfalls, streams and rare plants. The entrance is situated within Shanklin Old Village amongst popular local restaurants, pubs and thatched cottages.

Over half this beautiful island is protected as an Area of Outstanding Nature Beauty, so why not take a day to explore some of the stunning scenery by taking a drive along the Military Road. Travel west from Shanklin, through Ventnor, a coastal town that clings to the cliff side and is famously the preferred holiday destination for aspiring Victorians; perhaps stopping on route to get lost in the peaceful Ventnor Botanic Gardens. The final destination being Freshwater Bay, with its sparkly, clear water and breath-taking views and cliff top walks. Park in the Bay and walk up to Tennysons monument. To really blow the cobwebs out, continue to the most western point of the island and the landmark Needles. The birds eye view is worth the hike and refreshments are on hand at the Old Battery, which was the Victorian coastal defence and secret rocket testing site, perched above The Needles. Dropping down the other side of the Tennyson down, Alum Bay comes into view. The twenty-one different coloured sands create a distinctive backdrop for the shingle beach. For those with a head for heights, take the chairlift up and down to the beach, to see The Needles from a difference perspective.

Out of the many other island attractions, why not follow in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and visit her favourite summer residence. Osborne House and gardens was designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo by the Queen’s beloved husband Prince Albert. In contrast, a day spent at Blackgang Chine will ensure you a rather different Victorian experience; having opened in 1843, it remains the oldest themed attraction in the UK.

We enjoyed a fantastic week over New Year's at the Good Ships. It's a superb location within Shanklin everything you could possibly need within a 15-20 minute walk or 5 minute drive. Including beaches, shops, restaurants, supermarkets, pubs, walks, a theatre, and best of all, for me, fossil hunting. The house is a good size with a lovely private garden that would really come into its own in summer. Exceptionally clean and well provisioned, we felt at home right from the off with a really thoughtful welcome pack. With off-road parking, it's a superb base to explore the island. Overall, very well recommended.

The apartment was very spacious, clean and comfortable and was well thought out. It has lovely views across Shanklin to the downs and you can see the sea too. It was nice to have milk, tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits when we arrived too. I would happily recommend it as a lovely place to stay

We thoroughly loved our stay at the Good Ships. It is a lovely letting - we are determined to come back again another time! We were utterly delighted with the home, very comfortable, and would happily have stayed longer. We especially appreciated the pint of milk in the fridge waiting for us; we'd left our shopping trip for after we arrived but of course we first needed a cup of tea before we could brave the shops. The home was really well kitted out and had clearly put a lot of thought into what was needed.
